Diving a little further into my sketchbooks, I wanted to mention the importance of written words. Although this doesn’t necessarily contribute directly to the bodies of work I want to be creating, I find writing a good way to mediate complex ideas before they become visual. From writing down dreams, abstracted lists of thoughts, quotes, shopping lists, to pages of free association and very amateur poetry, words are just another way to materialize what I’m experiencing. Some things are easier contextualized in writing than in paint, and vice versa. I think it all feeds each other, and I’ve spent too long worrying about forcing every idea into a singular medium.
My favorite professor I’ve had is this one old guy I took creative writing with in Greece, who told us that structure and prompts are the root of all bad art, and I live by that. Do what makes you feel alive. Collect only things that matter. F*ck everything else.
